Empowering Through Giving: How Our Residents Enrich the Community

In addition to serving as the Executive Director of Gracious Grounds, I am also the proud father of a young man with an intellectual disability. My son, Matthew, has shaped my life in profound ways and continues to inspire my dedication to serving others with similar challenges.

This week, Matthew started a new job as a server at a retirement home. On his way to his first shift, he was filled with nerves and self-doubt, unsure if he could manage all the responsibilities or connect with the residents he would be serving. But I knew he was perfect for the role. Matthew is loving, caring, and incredibly polite. He also has an exceptional work ethic. My belief was confirmed when he returned home that evening with a giant smile on his face, eager to share every detail of his first day. He talked for an hour about the joy he felt serving the residents and the conversations he had with them. As he spoke, I could picture the smiles of the men and women he had served—brightened by the presence of this kind and compassionate young man.

At Gracious Grounds, we witness stories like Matthew’s every day. Our residents make invaluable contributions to the community through both employment and acts of service. Whether working in local businesses, volunteering at food banks, or assisting in senior centers, they bring dedication, kindness, and purpose to everything they do. Their efforts not only strengthen our community but also challenge misconceptions—showing the world that ability is not defined by a diagnosis but by determination and heart.

Now, I challenge you: How can you be part of this movement? Can you offer employment opportunities, become a mentor, or simply share our mission? Whether through hiring, volunteering, donating, or spreading awareness, your support helps individuals like Matthew and so many others thrive. Together, we can build a world where everyone is seen, valued, and given the opportunity to shine.
