Are We a Fit?

We’re committed to the success of each of our residents. Find out if Gracious Grounds is the right fit for you or your loved one.

Gracious Grounds is a nonprofit housing community that supports successful independent living for adults with intellectual disabilities.

Our residents are able to do the following either on their own or through external support services. It is the responsibility of the applicant, and their support team, to determine if you are able to live independently. Please note: Gracious Grounds does not provide any support services for the tasks below.

Fit Assessment

I may be a good fit for living at Gracious Grounds if I can independently, or with my support team, do the following:

✔️ Manage my medications.

I can take all medications on my own.

✔️ Take care of my own personal hygiene.

I am responsible for my own self-care, including laundry, shower, shaving, etc.

✔️ Clean up after myself.

I clean up following a meal, do my own dishes, and keep my room, bathroom, and any shared living space clean and sanitary.

✔️ Plan and prepare meals.

I can create a shopping list, shop for groceries, and prepare meals on my own.

✔️ Manage my time.

I manage my own schedule, get to work on time (as applicable), and control the use of my technology (video games, TV, phone, computer, etc.).

✔️ Be respectful.

Residents must treat all community members, staff and property with respect. This includes the ability to use any common areas without supervision. Community areas vary per property and may include; workout equipment, pool, recreation areas.

✔️ Be an engaged member of the Gracious Grounds community.

Residents are encouraged to participate in any activities, workshops, or events put on by Gracious Grounds that are of interest. (However, all activities are completely optional).

✔️ Be an active member of the local community.

Residents are encouraged to be a part of the community through employment, volunteer opportunities, and/or community involvement.

✔️ Utilize and arrange public transportation.

I can schedule pick-up and drop-offs using public transportation as needed. If I require transportation outside of public transportation hours, I understand that I would be responsible for finding alternative transportation. Gracious Grounds only provides transportation for select pre-planned outings as communicated to community members.

✔️ Manage personal finances.

I can manage spending money and personal finances that I receive or have in my room, on my person, or in my bank account.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

Gracious Grounds community members are most successful when they have a supportive and active team (e.g., family, guardians, support team, etc.) in place.

If an applicant needs additional assistance with any of the above listed items, securing additional assistance is the responsibility of the applicant.  Assistance is typically provided by parents/support teams, Community Living Support (CLS), Home Help, or similar assistance from an organization or privately paid individual. Gracious Grounds has created a resource guide to help navigate resources available in Ottawa County. The guide can be found by clicking the button below:

Meet Your Neighbors

Resident, Richard

Richard

Richard keeps himself busy with two jobs (one at a grocer where he stocks produce and one at a local hotel) and attending school. He enjoys his flexible free time, hanging and gaming, exploring YouTube, taking walks downtown, and participating in Gracious Grounds community activities,

“I like living here because it makes me feel independent and there are people here that can help me learn to be more independent. I also like that there is a pool when it’s nice out!”

Resident, Rikki

Rikki

Rikki dedicates time each week volunteering at Love in Action, creating “backpack blessings” alongside friends. She likes to stay active and has competed in the Special Olympics in soccer and floor hockey—she also likes basketball and volleyball.

“I’m very outgoing, I love to hang out with my friends and families, I love doing activities, I love going to the beach in the summer, and I love food like pizza! I’m currently in the process of getting a job.

Resident, Brandon

Brandon

Brandon was born and raised in Grand Haven. He is an only child and has a passion for all things Spartan and comic books. He has dedicated 12 years to working at Orchard Market and attends Noorthoek Academy. Excitingly, he is an active participant in Special Olympics, currently enjoying bocci ball.

“I can’t believe I have been at my place with Gracious Grounds for seven years now. I can’t believe how my life had been different since living with Gracious Grounds. I am able to do much more than I ever imagined myself to do.”
